This is unbelievable!
Rick Porcello has been suspended for five games, for his role in last night’s bench clearing fracas. Also, Edwin Jackson received an undisclosed fine for, what was called, “his aggressive actions.” Kevin Youkilis faces a five days suspension for charging at Porcello, after being hit by a pitch.
Rick Porcello said it was not intentional.
“The only thing I have to say about tonight is that I was not intentionally throwing at Kevin Youkilis,” Porcello said after the game. “That’s all I have to say. It was unintentional. There was nobody on. It’s a 3-0 game. I was not trying to hit him intentionally.”
The suspensions will be served, for both players, beginning tonight.
I question why Youklis didn’t receive more time off. Not only did he go after Porcello, who was clearly backing away during the charge, he also threw his helmet at him! I don’t get it.
Detroit took an early 3-0 lead prior to the fight, and then after a more than hour-long rain delay, lost the game, 7-5.
In addition to losing Porcello for one start, the Tigers will be without Miguel Cabrera, who was hit in the hand, and is listed as day to day. Carlos Guillen will start at first base tonight, in his place.
Unrelated to the brawl, Armando Galarraga will not pitch tonight, due to illness. Zach Miner will get the start for the Tigers.
I think Youk’s helmet throw was a little weak (Jim Rice I think was embarrassed by it) and I can’t help but wonder if the league looked at the circumstances of the first game and what lead up to what happened in the second game when they made their decision on suspensions.

How was that pitch not on purpose?
Porcello never throws pitches at anyone- and it just so happens that one time he does decide to hit someone- it’s Youkilis!
Don’t deny it, anyone can see it wasn’t an accident, he did throw that pitch at Youk! And that nasty pitch at Martinez.
I’m glad they both got suspensions. Hitting Youk with a pitch and Youk throwing his helmet at Porcello were both wrong.
