Mark Fidrych Autopsy Results

The untimely death of Mark Fidrych has rocked the baseball community, and Tigers fans to the core.

In a touching display of gratitude, the Tigers played a video tribute to “The Bird,” and observed a moment of silence just prior to yesterday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.

Fidrych’s autopsy results were released today.

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Former All-Star pitcher Mark Fidrych suffocated after his clothes became entangled with a spinning part on the truck he was working on, Massachusetts authorities said Thursday.

The state medical examiner’s office ruled the death an accident, according to a release from the Worcester District Attorney’s office.

A friend found Fidrych, 54, beneath a 10-wheel dump truck on Monday at his Northborough farm.

“He appeared to have been working on the truck when his clothes became tangled in the truck’s power takeoff shaft,” District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said in a statement.

A power takeoff shaft is a driveshaft that spins at high speed and can be used to power another piece of equipment.

The investigation is now closed, a spokesman for the DA said.

Jackie Robinson Day

JROBINSON.jpg

A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

April 15 is a special day in baseball. It is celebrated as Jackie Robinson Day across the league. It was sixty-two years ago that Robinson first broke the color barrier in baseball, and to honor this great man, and his legacy, all players wore his jersey number – 42.

Jackie Robinson had a career .311 batting average, played in six World Series with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and starred in six All-Star games. He is a member of Baseball’s Hall Of Fame.

His jersey number was retired by baseball, to honor his accomplishments in 1997.

TIGERS BEAT THE WHITE SOX

I can remember another Jackie – Jackie Gleason, who used to say, “How sweet it is!”

Yes, sweet is the only way to describe the feeling of having beat the Chicago White Sox today, 9-0.

The way I see it – Monday’s loss hurt, yesterday’s rain out was miserable, and this afternoon’s victory – makes up for both!

Armando Galarraga has proven, once again, that he is one of the more reliable pitchers on this team. Galarraga, along with the bullpen, held the ChiSox scoreless.

Miguel Cabrera belted his fourth home run of the year, en route to a 3 RBI game, and the win puts Detroit one game over the .500 mark, tied for first with the Royals.

It is an off day tomorrow, and the Tigers are in Seattle over the weekend.

It will be Justin Verlander on Friday, Edwin Jackson Saturday, and Rick Porcello on Sunday.

Tigers/White Sox Postponed

If you went to Comerica Park this afternoon to see a ballgame, you were disappointed.

The Tigers/White Sox game was postponed because of the rain. The make-up date has not been determined, but there will be plenty of opportunities to get it in.

The rain today spoiled the home debut of Rick Porcello, who will get his next start Sunday at Seattle. armandogalarraga.jpg

Tomorrow afternoon, the two teams will once again get together at Comerica Park. The third game of the set will pit Jose Contreras (7.20 ERA / 2.00 WHIP) against Armando Galarraga (1.29 ERA / 0.86 WHIP.

It appears that Zach Miner will not get a start now until sometime next week.

As for the postponed game today, Jim Leyland said,

“I don’t get excited about stuff like that, because you can’t control it. You make the best decision you can and you live with it.”

Very true, very true!

Mark “The Bird” Fidrych Dead

Fidrych.jpg

What an unbelievably tragic five days it has been in baseball. Two weeks ago, we lost Hall Of Famer and broadcaster, George Kell. Then, Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed by a drunk driver last week. Today, Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas died while preparing for a game, and then came news of the death of Former Tigers pitcher Mark “The Bird” Fidrych. He was only 54.

Fidrych was the most colorful player this town had ever seen. He talked to himself on the mound, he talked to the ball, and bounced around in between batters. During a rather dismal 1976 season for Detroit, Fidrych would pack fans into an otherwise anemic Tiger Stadium, each and every time he pitched.

We all loved to watch “The Bird!”

The 21 year old pitcher sported a 19-9 record, pitched 24 complete games, and had a 2.34 ERA. Subsequently, he was never able to match that season. It didn’t matter. He had already won us over, heart and spirit.

His personality off of the field was just as colorful. In 2002, he was inducted into the Baseball Reliquary’s Shrine of the Eternals. Unable to personally appear at the ceremonies, Thom Sharp accepted the award for him.

Fidrych was also a fascinating character, occasionally bringing to mind Yogi Berra in terms of his unique relationship to the English language.

“Bill Veeck once told Ernie Harwell that if someone had tried to stage Fidrych, it would have fallen flat; it would have been artificial and just too contrived.

During one of the Bird’s comeback tries, he made it back to the majors and was being interviewed by Harwell, who asked, ‘Hey, Bird, how’s the arm feeling?'”

“‘Hey, the arm’s feelin’ pretty good,’ Fidrych replied.

“‘Well, really, what does Dr. Livengood [the Tigers’ team physician] have to say about your arm?’ Harwell inquired.

“‘Well, he don’t know nothin’ about arms,’ Fidrych answered. ‘He’s a skin doctor. He’s one of them gynecologists.'”

“Mark Fidrych had one great, unbelievable, Cinderella year,” Sharp concluded. “And I don’t think we should feel too sorry for him that it only lasted a year. In my personal opinion, he had the best season anyone has ever had. He’s had a great life, a lot of great memories, a beautiful wife and daughter, and a strong business. And I’d just like to thank Mark Fidrych for giving me the best season I’ve ever had in baseball.”

It was magic when he pitched. He was truly special to watch.

Over the years, stars of varying magnitudes have passed through here, but for that one season in 1976, Fidrych’s star was the brightest of them all.

Thank-you for being yourself, and for not allowing anyone to change who you were.

Thank you for that season, Bird.

We all loved you, and we won’t soon forget you!

The Tigers Take First Place

Brandon Inge.jpg

They came into town boasting an undefeated record, and thanks to the Detroit Tigers, the Texas Rangers will leave after losing three in a row in Comerica Park.

The biggest concerns about Detroit’s pitching seemed to dissolve in the clear stream of beautiful pitching performances by starter and bullpen alike.

Yesterday, Justin Verlander, notwithstanding walked batters, seemed to have found his grove, striking out eight. Verlander and the bullpen combined to allow only two hits in the 4-3 victory. Nate Robertson picked up the win, while Fernando Rodney earned the save.

Today, we saw a classic come from behind win.

Edwin Jackson had given up four runs, all of them on two homers, but kept the Tigers in the game. Then, in what may amount to on-field apology to Jackson for Tuesday night, Brandon Lyon came in and pitched perfectly for two innings.

Kevin Millwood pitched six shut out innings, before turning the game over to C J Wilson to begin the eighth inning. Once Millwood was gone, the Tigers roared back from a 4-0 deficit. Sparking a six run inning, Brandon Inge hit a solo home run, the 100th home run of his career, as the Tigers went on to claim possession of first place.

Carlos Guillen helped out with a two run double, before leaving the game with an apparent injury.

In addition to decent pitching from the rotation this week, the bullpen has pitched seven straight innings without allowing a run. So, does this mean Detroit’s pitching woes are over? I won’t go as far as to say yes, we are only seven games in, but it sure looks as though things may be starting to jell for this team.

After a terrific opening day weekend, a sweep of Texas, and wonderful weather, let’s all enjoy the thrill of being in first.

The White Sox are in town tomorrow, and as we are all know, things can change quickly.

Tigers Win The Home Opener

Miggy 2009GS.jpg

It was a “grand slam” opening day in Detroit (thanks Miggy)!

The ballpark atmosphere, accentuated by the smell of the hot dogs, and the sound of families rambling to their seats, truly meant that spring had arrived in Detroit.

The Tigers didn’t disappoint the 44,588 enthused fans, bringing the Rangers to their knees with a score of 15-2.

Miguel Cabrera hit a grand slam in the fourth off of Kris Benson. It was his first with the Tigers, and the second of his career. It was the kind of home run that opening day dreams are made of. Cabrera drove in six runs, and is sporting a .611 batting average.

Along with Cabrera, Granderson doubled, and Gerald Laird tripled.

Armando Galarraga picked up his first victory of the season.

Adding an extra touch of emotion during opening day ceremonies was a tribute to former Tiger George Kell. Many fans recalled Kell’s play by play, and tearfully watched as a flag, bearing his initials, was raised in his honor.

This afternoon was a tribute also to Detroit’s auto workers.

Opening day in Detroit! There is nothing like it!

Detroit Tigers Home Opener

It has arrived! It’s Opening Day in Detroit!

The Texas Rangers are in town, and while the Tigers are 1-3, the Rangers boast an unbeaten record.

Well, it’s time to change that!

Armando Galarraga, who was the best we put on the mound last year, gets the nod for Detroit.

Kris Benson, in his first start since September 2006, will try to keep the Texas record spotless.

It’s a great day to be at the ball park.

There will be a tribute to the legendary George Kell at 12:35. Kid Rock will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and the Tigers will be honoring Detroit’s autoworkers.

“The thing with the automakers [using the center-field fountain as a show of support] is an unbelievable gesture,” Leyland said. “Hopefully that’ll lighten some spirits a little bit. Hopefully we’ll give them a good show. We’ll be playing a team that’s obviously swinging the bats extremely well right out of the chute. They can hit. So can we.”

Get out and show your support for the auto industry today, and for your Detroit Tigers. Baseball is back in the D!

Go Tigers!!

Nick Adenhart

adenhart_obit_576.jpg

Last night, after the Tigers game was done – and won – I turned to the list of ball games being played, and decided on the Angels/Oakland game.

The young pitcher for Los Angeles was phenomenal. One of the best performances I have seen.

Nick Adenhart pitched the game of his life last night, and then a drunk driver took his life from him in the morning hours after the game. He was just 22 years old.

The driver who hit him – survived. He now faces vehicular manslaughter charges.

Baseball is a community. A community of players and fans. As fans, there is a relationship that we develop with the guys on the field. When something likes this happens, we all share the pain.

The tragedy became particularly meaningful for Detroit fans, as we watched two rookie pitchers face each other in Toronto. A few times today we thought that it could have easily been one of them. It reminded us just how short life really is.

My thoughts, and prayers go out to Nick Adenhart’s family and friends.

Read this story from Lyle Spencer, a writer for MLB.com, on MLBlogs. Tonight let’s remember a young guy who was only just stepping out, onto the big stage.

When the best, and brightest of us, are pulled from the game of life, we cry.

But, tonight, the stadium lights, in another place, will shine upon a new player on the field. And, the crowd there will cheer.

Last night, Nick Adenhart pitched for the Los Angeles Angels.

He’ll be pitching tonight, too. It will be with a new team of angels.

Tigers Pick Up First Win Of 2009

Miguel Cabrera.jpgI am breathing easier tonight.

As finally, for the first time this season, the Detroit Tigers put a notch in the win column, by beating the Blue Jays 5-1.

The last two nights have been disastrous, but tonight, everything seemed to be moving in their direction.

Here are some highlights…

Miguel Cabrera launched two shots, a three run homer to left in the first, and another one out to center in the fourth.

Brandon Inge, according to David Vincent of SABR, became the first Tiger to hit a home run in each of the first three games to start the season.

Zach Miner, who pitched poorly during the spring, was able to keep it together after a rough first inning.

Ryan Perry entered the game, and pitched a perfect eighth in his major league debut.

And, lastly, tonight went so well for the Tigers, even Fernando Rodney came on in the ninth, and was able to finish off the Blue Jays, without any of the drama that has typically accompanied him.

Nice job tonight!

Let’s do it again tomorrow.

Edwin Jackson Rocks. Bullpen Rocked!

Anticipating Tigers baseball in the evening, I opened the curtains Monday morning, and saw what we all had dreaded – SNOW!

“Oh no, not again!” I said. “I thought we were done with this.”

Those same words came back to my lips, as I watched another Tigers lead blown by the bullpen.

“Oh no, not again!”

My first question, why was Edwin Jackson pulled after only 89 pitches? This was his game to lose.

According to Jason Beck’s MLBlog, Jim Leyland said that Jackson was pulled because,

“There was no question that he was starting to go. There was no question about that. It was the perfect situation for Seay to come in, get out the one lefty who was a pretty good hitter. We got that. We felt real good about it, but there was no doubt in my mind about that. I don’t question that at all. He gave us everything you could ask for and more. Rolen hit the home run, and we had the unfortunate little play there that we didn’t make. That’s all part of the game.”

Up until he was yanked from the game, Jackson pounded the zone, throwing 60 of his 89 pitches, for strikes.

He gave up a home run to Scott Rolen in the bottom of the eighth.

After Overbay reached on an error, and Rod Barajas popped out, Bobby Seay relieved him. I will give credit where it is due. Seay did his job.

Brandon Lyon came on in the eighth, and the rest is history, as they say.

It is easy to second guess managerial decisions from the comfort of my chair, and I do trust Leyland’s guiding hand, but once again, “I thought we were done with this.”

So, starting tonight, can we be done with this? Can the Tigers finally move forward, and be the team I think they are?

Brandon Inge thinks so!

“This is not what to expect during the year for anyone watching on the outside,” Inge said Tuesday night. “This is more of a fluke, last year was more of habit. You won’t see this that much.

“We’re too good of a ballclub with too good of an attitude for this to happen on a daily basis,” he said.

Zach Miner will attempt to make things right at 7:07ET tonight. The Toronto Blue Jays will send Jesse Litsch out to face Miner in the third game of this series.
