It’s Over!

What a weekend for baseball fans, huh?

Let me start with the Yankees game from last night! I was in near tears watching the pre-game ceremonies. The folks who put this together have every reason to be proud of what they brought to life last night!!

These are a few of the moments that I found to be particularly poignant…

*Yogi Berra taking his position behind home plate. Couldn’t you just feel his emotion as he looked down at the plate, and then around to the batter’s boxes?

*Babe Ruth’s daughter throwing out the first pitch.

*Billy Martin’s son taking the field.

*Thurman Munson’s son walking out onto the field.

*Bobby Murcer’s family walking out onto the field.

*Willie Randolph’s slide into second. Apparently done on a dare!

*Bernie Williams receiving a long 2 minute ovation.

And, there were just tons of other various moments, like Jeter’s speech. Like watching Don Larsen scoop up dirt from the pitcher’s mound… listening to Bob Sheppard’s address to kick things off. The list is nearly endless. I was held spellbound throughout the entire night!

DETROIT TIGERS

While Yankee fans were getting ready to end their beloved stadium’s tenure, we were already resigned to our fate. The Tigers dropped three to the Indians in a weekend that began with a roar, well kind of, if you think of the Sheffield/Carmona fireworks on Friday night as a “roar.”

It didn’t last long though.

Hey, even FSN Detroit has pretty much called it a night on this team, too. They were showing hot dog races and interviewing Indians players on the field at the conclusion of the games.

WXYT baseball sidekick Jim Price summed it up nicely, when during Saturday night’s broadcast, he said “they’re just mailing it in!”

At one point during one of these games, Ordonez had a chance to throw a runner out at the plate.

There was no hustle!  None!

Price remarked that Ordonez had looked as if he had “conceded the run.” He said that there wasn’t anything behind the throw to the plate.

Sad!  What happened to the “nine full innings” philosphy? Oh, wait! It must be the – that’s only a good rule to follow when you’re team has a winning record – philosphy!

Yeah, I’m a little disgusted.

Tonight starts a three game set against Kansas City. Zach Miner is pitching for Detroit. Gil Meche is on the hill for KC.

By the way, Sheff is out for four games beginning tonight. Carmona got hit with six for his role in Friday night’s fracas.

RANDOMNESS

I sat outside on a chilly Saturday night and listened to KABC and the Los Angeles Dodgers. When I retired for the night and went inside I turned to FSN Prime Ticket, which televises the Dodgers games. Vin Scully remarked that Joe Torre was wearing a huge wrist watch. When he was asked why, he said it was a self-winding watch and if he doesn’t wear it it runs out.

For me sometimes, it’s the things that aren’t entirely baseball related, that adds to the dimension of a baseball broadcast. Scully has mastered this art.

I also liked the comment he made while Manny was at the plate and James Loney was on deck.

He said “Loney could be out there dancing and no one would see him. All eyes are on Manny!”

It’s vintage Vin Scully. He’s great!

Tigers Skip Serves Suspension! Sheffield In A Scrum!

Wow! What a week this has turned out to be, huh? Tiger’s manager Jim Leyland is suspended for the three games in Cleveland because of “inappropriate conduct,” and now this!

Are the Tigers melting down? Is it frustration overload?

The answer is yes to both questions! This has been a frustrating, difficult season all the way around. They’re letting off a little steam. Can you blame them? Well, can you? They feel it just as much as we do, but more.

First of all, let me say that I think that Shef did what he had to do. Fausto Carmona intended to hit him with that pitch! Then, he goaded him while he stood at first… and tried to pick him off! He wanted a fight. The history behind last night’s scrum goes back to April 17th. Five batters were hit by pitches, including Sheffield.

Who was pitching that night? Carmona, of course!

I get why Shef was ejected, but I don’t understand why Polanco was run. The replays of the fight seemed only to show that Polanco was trying to calm the situation.

Victor Martinez was ejected from last night’s game as well.

Ironically, I intended to discuss suspensions/ejections in baseball this weekend, and what warrants them. You see, I don’t think Leyland should be run for his argument with umpires on Monday and Tuesday. Nor do I think he should have been suspended. His actions didn’t warrant it. Now, if he swung at an umpire – absolutely. You have to go! Get suspended and pay your fine. I’m seeing players get run just for looking at umpires wrong! They need to develop a thicker hide in baseball.

Last night’s actions on the other hand do. Carmona had Sheffield in a headlock and was pounding him in the top of the head! He should be out for a while! Sheffield will undoubtedly be out too. That’s too bad, Sheffield’s quest for 500 was the one true bright spot in this terrible year,  along with Magglio’s possible batting title!

What do you think?

Tonight’s game will be interesting to see. First pitch is at 7:05 ET.  Justin Verlander starts for Detroit while Jeremy Sowers gets the nod for Cleveland.

By the way, in the April 17 hit fest, Verlander was the pitcher.

YANKEE STADIUM FAREWELL

Tomorrow is the final game at Yankee Stadium. I listened to the Yankees on WCBS this afternoon on MLB’s Gameday Plus Audio. They were saying that there is a big farewell planned. Suzyn Waldman said she had asked to be informed of the events planned, but was only given a hint. She said she teared up at just the little bit she was told!

The ceremonies begin at 7ET. Unfortunately, this is ESPN’s Sunday Night game and their broadcast starts at 8! I’m sure they’ll show some of it during the broadcast.

I’ve always had a fondness for Yankee Stadium, although I’ve never been there. We were both born on an April 18!

CARLOS GUILLEN

Carlos is out for the rest of the season because of his back.  He hasn’t played since August 25th.

TIGER STADIUM

I made my promised visit to the site this afternoon.

I’ll post the pictures tomorrow!

Cleveland Series Finale This Weekend!

The final three games the Tigers will play against Cleveland begin tonight. In the opener the Tigers send Armando Galarraga to face Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona. Armando has had his share of troubles lately. I hope he can get it done tonight for us!

Then, it’ll be Justin Verlander and Jeremy Sowers in Game 2.

Game 3 will feature Dontrelle Willis and Scott Lewis.

I’m watching Dontrelle closely, just like everyone else, I’m sure. I was unhappy with his performance on Monday. Let’s hope he’s not as shaky on Sunday!

CURTIS GRANDERSON

I was just reading where Curtis Granderson will be the player analyst for the American League and National League Division Series for TBS!

He’s a smart guy. I really value his opinion. I attended a symposium about the breaking of the color barrier in baseball by Jackie Robinson. Granderson appeared with the President of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Gates Brown, and Ernie Harwell. When he was questioned by audience members, his answers were well thought out and insightful.

He’s been my favorite player on this ball club since the first day I watched him play in 2004. He had superstar written all over him then!

TIGER STADIUM

I’m going to take another trip out to the Tiger Stadium site and grab some pictures. It’ll make my fifth such visit since the demolition began.

Look for the pictures this weekend!

TIGERS SKIPPER SUSPENDED FOR 3 GAMES!

The Tigers begin a three game set against Cleveland tomorrow night and they’ll have to do it without Jim Leyland.

It was just announced that Leyland has been suspended for inappropriate conduct during Monday and Tuesday’s games. Leyland argued with umpires during both games. He was ejected from Monday’s game. On Tuesday, he was livid when the Tigers were denied an appeal from first on a Michael Young checked swing.

He was also fined an undisclosed amount.

Tigers Stop Skid! Go Go Garcia!!

After a debacle filled week of rough starts, blown leads, blown saves and shaky comebacks… FINALLY A PITCHER THAT CAN PITCH!

Freddy Garcia hasn’t pitched in 15 months but, he was as Jim Leyland said after the game, “a thing of beauty!”

Garcia looked confident last night. It’s about time someone did! He had good mound presence. After one particular inning the camera caught him flashing a half-smile… a kind of “yeah I still got it” kind of smile!

Garcia threw an economical 59 pitches over 5 innings in the 17 – 4 Tigers win. See his line below!

5IP 2H 1R 0ER 1BB 3SO 0HR  0.00 ERA!! 0.60 WHIP

He’s scheduled to pitch again in Detroit Tuesday night against the Royals. I just sold my tickets for this game and now I’ve got second thoughts. Too late! But, I will be at Friday night’s game to see the Tigers face the Rays! That could be really exciting!

SHEFFIELD

Gary was hitless last night in his quest for 500!

DUSTY RYAN

Wow! I like him – alot! He had 4 hits in last nights game. In 20 at bat’s he has had 8 hits, scored 3 runs, has homered and has driven in 5 runners. The FSN Detroit TV crew of Mario Impemba and Rod Allen remarked as well that the pitchers are liking him behind the plate, too!

Is there a full-time catchers role in his future? If he continues like this, why not? I’d like to see Brandon Inge go back to third.

OFF DAY

Tigers are off tonight. Beginning tomorrow night, they’ll have three in Cleveland before coming home to play host to KC.

Most likely I’ll be watching the Mets tonight… and checking in on the Yankees, too!

Boston has the night off, but not Tampa Bay! With a win tonight, the Rays can extend their lead over the Red Sox by a half game. I’ll peek in on them as well.

Santana is pitching tonight for the Mets, who NEED to keep winning!

The Rays are sending James Sheilds out face Minnesota. He’s 13 – 8 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.

The Twins have lost 4 in a row.

Bullpen Blows it – Again! AL/NL East Races Tight!

Last night’s loss to the Ranger’s was the hardest to watch and most difficult to swallow. The bullpen blew it… specifically Fernado Rodney. And, there wasn’t much help from HP ump Angel Hernandez,  who wouldn’t allow an appeal on a possible strike out to Michael Young in the ninth. It wasn’t much fun to watch Jim Leyland meltdown after this one was finally over. He actually had to be restrained by the other umpires officiating last night’s game. He’s frustrated with the season. I don’t blame him. Hernandez just happened to be in the line of fire. Anyway you look at it, we lost another.

Come to think of it, maybe this one really wasn’t as bad as other losses I’ve seen this season. Have you ever bumped your elbow on the funny bone? Ouch! Then bumped it in the same spot later? Double Ouch! Then again. You know where I’m going… If you keep hitting the same spot over and over, it’s not so much that you’re getting hit, it’s just that the area is tender. The pain just naturally feels worse. That’s what I’m feeling here.

The streak is at 6. DET 4  TEX 5

Tonight the Bengal’s send Freddy Garcia to the mound for his first start of the season. Texas will counter with Dustin Nippert. He’s 3-4 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP.

If Garcia performs well, we have a pretty good chance to put a halt to this losing streak!

 TIGHT RACES/PREDICTIONS

This is September and that means scoreboard watching! It’s virtually turned into a toss-up in a couple of the races.

Don’t count out the Mets! This isn’t last year. Quit comparing this team to the team that collapsed at the end of the season in 2007. Yes, they’ve lost ground since August. But, I don’t think they’re finished. Not yet!

I don’t know what the AL East will look like when all is said and done. I would like to see Tampa Bay get in there though as something other than the wild-card. You know what I’m saying!

White Sox will take the Central. No question about it.

Cubs and Dodgers will be in the play-offs as well!

Are you already thinking about potential series match-ups? I am.

Cubs and White Sox?

Angels and Dodgers?

Mmmm.. the fun is only just beginning.

 JETER GETS 1271

Before Yankee Stadium shuts out the lights for the last time, one more record has been broken. Derek Jeter stands alone in the hits at Yankee Stadium record… surpassing Lou Gehrig.

Congratulations on the milestone!

Although born in New Jersey, Jeter was raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan!

 GARY SHEFFIELD

Speaking of milestones, Shef is still looking for number 500. He’s currently at 497. Well now, that’s nothing that a little 3 homer game can’t cure. Wouldn’t it be nice? He’s never hit three out of the park in one game before!

 2009 TIGERS SCHEDULE

The Detroit Tigers open their ’09 campaign on the road in Toronto on April 6th. The home opener is against Texas on April 10th. I’m pretty excited to see the Cubs are going to be coming to Comerica Park June 23 – 25. I like the inter-league games. It’s a chance to see teams that you don’t see often… Colorado and Milwaukee are coming back, too. Minnesota and the White Sox are going to be in town to wrap up the season. Imagine if we’re in a pennant race next year!

I’m getting chills just thinking about it!

Not Big Papi – My Poppy!

0712081359.jpg

0712081359a.jpg

While the demolition of Tiger Stadium in Detroit continues, I’m more than ever reminded of my grandfather…

I called him Poppy.

Poppy lived with my grandma just a few streets away from Tiger Stadium on Perry, just off of Trumbull in Detroit. Back in the 1950’s the house next door to Poppy’s was torn down. He purchased the property. After getting the go ahead from the City Of Detroit, he had the property paved and began parking cars for the patrons of Tiger baseball games and, at least at that time, the Detroit Lions football games. For each Tiger’s home game, Poppy would park the cars. Then he would sit in his chair on the sidewalk. He kept a watchful eye on them, especially post riots and with a rising crime rate in the city. On those hot summer days, he occasionally enjoyed a bottle of Pabst. The most vivid memory I have, the picture in my head, is of Poppy listening to the home games being played on a small, battery operated radio.

He would wait until the last cars left before he himself called it a night. The folks who parked here expected their cars to be be safe. Poppy made sure they were!

Poppy was thrilled when his beloved Tigers won the World Series in 1968.

In less than a year and a half, Poppy would be gone.

When I started going to ballgames on my own, I was always sure to drive down Perry Street. I told the stories of parking cars and helping Poppy. I remember standing in the the street and with a big, red flag in hand, my sister and I tried to persuade the folks to  “park here, 50 cents!”

Of course, as time rolled on, year after year, the neighborhood changed. The house was eventually torn down. The row of wooden houses that had made up the tightly knit neighborhood became a field of weeds and memories. And, today the parking structure for the Motor City Casino coldly stands there, unaware that the ground it now occupies was once quite special to me.

In the summer of ’06, I got hold of the broadcast when Tiger’s pitcher Denny McLain got his 30th win. That game was played at Tiger Stadium in Detroit on September 14, 1968.

I carefully planned a personal tribute to him.

You see, I knew that he would have listened to this game on THAT day. He heard this game. The words Ernie Harwell spoke reached his hears and they too, would reach mine. It was a way of connecting with a past that had faded away.

I bought a bottle of Pabst… one bottle. Just one! It would be for the toast. I grabbed a lawn chair, sat in my yard and put the CD in…

Well, this is the big day for the Maestro Denny McLain…” Harwell began.

I opened the beer.

“Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium,”  Harwell continued.  “…September the 14th 1968 and Denny will be going for win number 30!”

I took a sip from the bottle, hoisted it skyward. I felt him with me that afternoon.

Baseball connects people. I believe that. There is something about this game that brings people together in the here and now…  and in the hereafter. It’s why we blog. It’s why stories about Ty Cobb and other players thrill us and we become spellbound. It’s why we love the game. It’s why places like Tiger Stadium are special to us.

Go to a baseball game and you’ll find people talking with people that they don’t know. I’ve met people from Seattle, Chicago, Cleveland and Minnesota. I’ve spoken, through a translator, to a guy from Japan who was at Comerica Park to see Ichiro play.

This game connects us and allows us to make connections. You won’t get that from any other!  Baseball is special!

And now…I have a confession to make.

The reason I’m telling you about Poppy is my way of – again reaching out, connecting to my past. You see, one hundred and seven years ago – today – my grandfather took his first breath.

Happy Birthday, Poppy!

Game 2 Against Texas Tonight!

The Tigers are going to try and stop their 5 game skid tonight.

Getting the start for the Tigers is Zach Miner. He’s 8-4 with a  4.29 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

Texas will counter with Kevin Millwood. 9-9 and carrying a 5.15 ERA with 1.63 WHIP.

Freddy Garcia will make his season debut for Detroit tomorrow night.

What Chu Talkin’ Bout – Willis?

Dontrelle Willis is making his first start since June 9th. And, I gotta say.. I’m still nervous watching him pitch. As you know, he has an unorthodox style to his hurls. He says that dates back to when as a kid he had to get batters out when they were playing ball. I’m working on forgiving him for that. His style I can learn to live with. The problem though is that his control is spotty. He doesn’t have good command of his fastball. And, he gives up too many walks. I’ve seen a number of pitches go into the dirt tonight. The Rangers are hitting the ball pretty hard off of him, too. He’s been lucky for the most part though… a couple have gone foul, Curtis Granderson saved him big-time with a tremendous catch at the wall in center. He’s been getting behind the hitters alot! I don’t think he’s got it!  I just don’t!  At the end of the day, the line on him may not look too bad. But, he’s shaky. Yet, I’m going to give him another start before I write him off for good though. C’mon D-Train…

WILLIS 5IP 2H 3R 3ER 5BB 4SO 1HR

KENNY ROGERS

Kenny Rogers won’t be used by Jim Leyland again this year. He may have pitched his last game as a Tiger. His career record is 219-156. Detroit fans will never forget his masterful pitching performance in the 2006 play-offs and of course the World Series.

Was that really dirt on his hand?

I’m going to miss him… maybe the Tigers should think of giving him a job as… hmmm… Pitching Coach? The kids listen to him. How many times did you see Bonderman or Verlander go to Kenny in the dugout while they were having issues on the mound? They trust his advice!

TAYLOR TEAGARDEN

Taylor got his 1st career grand slammy off of Tiger’s pitcher Gary Glover, who came on in the sixth for Dontrelle Willis. It’s the second grand slam given up by Tigers pitching in an equal number of nights!
