Skipstradamus Analyzes Predictions!

                                               nostradamus1.jpg

In the year 2008, many happily enjoy hoagies well into the next arena;

The storm brews in the west. Hurtling white missles will leave many from the east in tears;

The past victors of eighty-eight dodge laboriously past the awakened, formidable bear;

While the new ones fall; triumphant are them who stand tall in the windy city!

The above Skipstradamus quatrain was recently found in a cave in a small Spanish town. It’s authenticity has not yet been verified, but the predictions contained within were too important to be witheld from the baseball public!

As you can see by looking at yesterday’s post, my mad skills at predicting game outcomes leave much to be desired!

Here’s how we’re shaping up…

OCTOBER 1, 2008

  • Phillies beat the Brewers 3 – 1   PHI leads series   1 – 0
  • Dodgers over Cubbies  7 – 2      LAD leads series   1 – 0
  • Boston beat LAA 4 – 1              BOS leads series  1 – 0

With the exception of the Boston victory, I’m on track!  I did say that LAA would sweep the BoSox… OK, so that won’t happen, but I still see a Los Angeles 2nd Round!

I know the Boston fans think I’m a crackpot! Maybe!

As of this writing, two games have already been played today. I won’t add those in just yet as the third game, LAD/CHC is just getting underway.

Can’t We Just Get Along?

I was really excited about the beginning of baseball’s second season, today! I awoke this morning with the suggestion of a smile upon my lips.
Jim Leyland 2008.jpgThe anticipation of new things in my life. All things that were old had passed!

Poof!  Gone Away!

Most notably, the dismay and melancholy I’d begun to feel daily were gone!

It was a new day!

Then, I picked up the morning paper. There it was
 puh-
lease, don’t take my sunshine away! –
an interview with Tigers manager, Jim Leyland. He was discussing what should have been and everything that wasn’t  –  about the 2008 Detroit Tigers.

Jim Leyland wasn’t given a contract extension. He’s not happy about that. OK!  I see that. But, he’s as much to blame for this team ending up in last place, just as much as the players themselves are.

“I have not been extended, and I’m not gonna be extended,” Leyland said. “Dave and I have had a conversation. There was some sense of an offer that I did not accept. … “I want to manage the Tigers. I have every intention of managing the Tigers. I’m disappointed that I did not get an extension but I understand — well, maybe I don’t understand.”

He went on to say that the two coaches fired earlier this week were “mere scapegoats for people not doing their jobs.”

He has had a frustrating season! He goes on to say during the interview that he accepts responsibilty for the 74 – 88 last place finish. It sure seems like he’s putting a lot of others out there on the ol’ barby!

Obviously, there were performance issues. There were even rumors of clubhouse issues through-out the year. There was indecisiveness about who was gonna play first/third/catch, etc. Who would bat and in what order… and, of course, there were the injuries. Injuries to Granderson, Bonderman, Zumaya, and Rodney certainly were unexpected and didn’t help us. But, we have to stop criticizing and start looking for solutions to the problem. It’s possible comments like this might fire them up — get ’em going — during the season. But, right now – today – they just sound bad!

They sound real bad!

It makes me think that there’s much more going on here. That saddens me!

And, with that…

PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

Here’s how I think things are going to shape up in the divisional series… and, just so you know, every year I’m wrong! Yep!
I suck at predictions!  But, here goes anyhow…

  • The Phillies will win their series with the Brewers in 4!
  • The Dodgers will win over the Cubs. This one will go 5 games!
  • The Angels will beat Boston. I see a sweep here!
  • Chicago edges out the Rays in 5.

What do YOU think?

Tonight’s The Night!

White Sox Logo.jpg                                                           minnesota_twins_logo200.jpg

The White Sox and the Twins have a one game playoff tonight to determine who’ll take the Central.

The pitching match-up is Nick Blackburn (11 – 10  4.14 ERA  1.37 WHIP) for the Twins and John Danks (11 – 9  3.47 ERA  1.25 WHIP) for Chicago.

Look for a Chicago White Sox win tonight! The ChiSox have a bit of an edge coming off of the victory yesterday. Minnesota will be tired from the flight. Chicago is once again picking up steam!

They are fired up!

HONORS AND EXTENSIONS

Miguel Cabrera picked up the AL home run title. He’s the first Tiger since Cecil Fielder in 1990 to lead the league in home runs! He had 37!

Congrats to Cliff Lee and Brad Lidge. Both players received Comeback Player of the Year honors! Lee was Cleveland’s first 20-game winner since Gaylord Perry in 1974. Lidge was a perfect 41-for-41 in save opportunities as the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies closer.

Lou Pinella’s option for 2010 was picked up by the Cubs.

And finally, Brian Cashman and the Yankees have agreed to a contract that’ll keep the GM with New York through 2011.

Last Place!

3a453ec7-f5fe-47c2-afe1-13ef1a52f397.jpg

If you saw the game today, you saw an encapsulated Tigers season. It was ugly! Awful and ugly!

But first, Freddy Garcia pitched brilliantly today. His line was 5IP 2H 2R 3BB 3SO. He would have won this game, all on his own, had he not suffered a neck injury in the sixth. We were up 2 – 1 with no outs, Chicago had a runner on second. Galarraga came on in relief and promptly threw two wild pitches. (This is the same guy who was one of our points of light through-out the season.) The tying run scored and we just fell apart. We had reached our expiration date! When the milk goes bad… it goes REALLY BAD! Alexei Rameriz belted his fourth grand slam off of Gary Glover, setting a rookie record! Then, it was smooth sailing for the ChiSox for the rest of the game. They won 8 – 2 and have one game tomorrow against the Twins. The winner will win the AL Central and head to the play-offs!

The Tigers wrap up the year in last place, one game behind the Kansas City Royals.

Tigers VS White Sox Today!

mlb_a_ozzie_freddy_600.jpg

The Tigers/White Sox game finally got underway today after a 3 hour rain delay. Geez!  It seems as though bad weather is just following these two teams around.

It’s interesting that Freddy Garcia is starting for Detroit.

He’s pitched for the White Sox.

At the start of the season, Ozzie Guillen said he didn’t see him pitching at all this year.

He’s married to Ozzie’s second cousin!

And, Garcia’s pitching against Gavin Floyd. These two guys were traded for each other!  It’s sometimes bizarre how things turn out!

The Tigers in a spoiler role!

It was the best we could do with 161 games!  What more did you want? Yeah, that was sarcasm!

2009 TIGERS CHANGES

Yesterday, I mentioned briefly that the Tigers fired Chuck Hernandez and Jeff Jones. And, it was long overdue!  I also understand that all of the other coaches were asked to come back next season. All accepted –  except one. I don’t know who that is. I feel as though it may be first base coach Andy Van Slyke. I recall that at the start of last season he made some comments about wanting to spend more time with his family.

Edgar Renteria will not be in a Tigers uniform next year. The organization won’t be picking up his option.

After Saturday’s game, Jim Leyland said that he had already figured out what to do about our third base dilemma. Brandon Inge would now move over to third. It’s true that Brandon needs a bigger stick at the plate, but we got hurt without his defensive skills at the hot corner!

Also, Carlos Guillen will get the start in left field. Whoa!  What?? You’ve got to be kidding me? I really can’t see him out in left. What about Marcus Thames?

The pitching staff is in dire need of an overhaul…

Oh, and we still don’t have an everyday catcher!

So, that means that next year will focus on rebuilding.

Here we go again!

FINALLY! A Tigers Game That Will Count!

This is going to be a somewhat short entry tonight! I went to the Tigers/Rays game this afternoon at Comerica Park. My buddy Rob fell into a couple of tickets. The seats were behind home plate. They were back just far enough so that I couldn’t be the cell phone guy. But, not back enough to get out of the sun. I completely forgot the sun screen! I’m crispy and tired. OUCH! Oh, the pain I endure for these guys!

Oh the pain!

We lost the game in extra innings. The bullpen blew a well-pitched game by starter Zach Miner!

Sadly, Shef didn’t get number 500 today. He’ll get a chance tomorrow, though!

ONE MORE GAME!

With the White Sox and Twins winning today, Chicago will play Detroit in a make-up game tomorrow. If the Tiger’s win, the Twins will take the Central and advance to the playoffs! If Chicago wins, they’ll have to play the Twins on Tuesday!

Well, at least we’ve got a game that counts for something!

COACHES FIRED

The Tigers have fired pitching coach Chuck Hernandez and bullpen coach Jeff Jones! I was calling for their heads a month into the season.

What took the Tigers so damn long???

METS FALL HARD! BREWERS ADVANCE!

The Mets lost today to the Marlins and the Brewers beat the Cubs. Sadly, the Mets have experienced Deja Vu. For the second straight year they have been knocked out of the play-offs on the last day of the season.

With another complete game win from CC, the Brewers advance to the play-offs for the first time since 1982.

Closing In On The End!

S5030425 AA.JPGWell, the season is fast coming to a close! Last night I got to the ballpark at 5. I wanted to see BP and soak up as much as I could before the end of the night! When I got to the park, I bought my scorecard. It’s fan appreciation weekend and there were a lot of opportunities to buy some player used items, like game used jerseys, bats, autographed balls, etc. The only things I grabbed were two programs for 5 bucks! One was the Inaugral Day at Comerica Park… April 11, 2000. The other was the 2005 All Star Game program. That game, of course, was held at Comerica Park. Afterwards, I bought a few 50/50 tickets to help out The Detroit Tigers Foundation. Then, I was off for a “Walk-Thru…”

First stop… the visiting Tampa Bay Rays dugout to watch The Rays on the field. Inside the dugout Joe Maddon was being interviewd by a televison reporter.

The Rays were hoping to win in order to clinch the AL East. The Tiger’s had different plans for them though.

S5030419 AA.JPG

S5030417 AA.JPG From there I wandered over to the Detroit dugout…

S5030421 AA.JPG

The fans were few. Usually, it’s jam packed with folks trying to get a glimpse of their favorite Tiger.

From there it was time to get a beer and a dog and go to my seat to fill out the starting line-up.

S5030424 AA.JPG

The seats were in the Tiger’s Terrace along the third base side. These seats are cushioned and give you lots of room for your legs and feet. My buddy Rob got the tickets and graciously gave me one. Thanks Rob!

Here’s Rob helping out a guy who had gone to the bathroom and wanted to know what he had missed!

S5030437 AA.JPG

It was a perfect night for a ballgame. Gary Sheffield hit home runs 498 and 499. Justin Verlander pitched well. 5IP 4H 2ER 3BB 8SO and… the Tigers went on to win the game 6 – 4!

I got a call from Rob today. He was able to get a hold of two tickets to Sunday’s season finale. So… the last game of 2008 will be my last game as well!

THE TIGERS BEAT THE RAYS!

Finally, a win! Whew! I was really beginning to wonder if we would see a victory again this year. OK, that’s not really true, but it was sure looking pretty bad there. Ramon Santiago belted two homers today. Mike Hessman had his second in as many games. Dusty Ryan said let me try, too! And, Curtis Granderson tallied with his 21st.

The final score was 7 – 5!

The Ray’s shipped 200 bottles of champagne to Comerica Park for today’s game, but the Detroit win has stalled Tampa Bay’s AL East championship… at least for now. Keep a close eye on the Boston/Cleveland game tonight!

If Boston loses, the Rays will clinch.

The pitching match-up tonight is Jon Lester (15-6 3.26 ERA 1.30 WHIP) for the BoSox and the Indians will send Jeremy Sowers (4-8 5.48 ERA 1.48 WHIP) to the mound.

I’ll be at the game tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to it. First 25,000 fans are going to get an autographed thank-you card. I’ll be there early to watch BP.

It’s my last Tiger’s game of the season. I’ll try to bring you some game stuff on Saturday… pictures, thoughts, happenings – you know!

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

The Dodgers have their first division title in 4 years. The Diamondbacks lost today to St Louis and really handed the title over. The Dodgers will take the field tonight at 10:10 ET.

Congratulations Dodgers!

“I’ll Never Stress You Out Again!”

And, that he did a number of times!

Todd Jones announced today that he plans to retire at the end of this season. After sixteen season’s in the big’s, he’s calling it quits. He made the announcement in a column he writes for The Sporting News.

Here’s a part of what he wrote…

“If you’re a Tigers fan, I’ll never stress you out again. If you’re not a Tigers fan, you’ll never have me as your ace in the hole, convinced I’ll blow a lead against your team.”

I kind of feel bad for him.

There’s no doubt that “Roller Coaster Jones” gave us some rather stressful ninth innings. He always seemed to be able to get the first two outs with ease and then after that, well, we never knew exactly how it would end.

There’s no doubt in my mind that when he came out of the bullpen –  after throwing that water bottle to the wayside – he was convinced he could do the job!  Many times he did! He saved 37 games in 2006 and 38 in 2007. He’s the Tigers career leader in saves with 235.

I was at Comerica Park on the night of August 15. We played the Orioles that night and lost 11-2. Jones came in to replace Casey Fossum. It was nothing short of a disaster. Although, it wasn’t entirely his fault. A Cabrera error and a Polanco error didn’t do us any favors. Jonesy barely made it through 2/3 of the inning, though. He lowered his head as he walked off the field. Halfway to the dugout, the boo-birds let him have it.

I felt as if it was the last time I’d see him in a ballgame.

As it turns out, I was right.

DODGERS

Well, as of right now the Tigers are losing to the Royals in the middle of the seventh, 9-0.

I can’t watch this anymore.

Sooo, the Dodgers are playing tonight at 10:10ET.

They play the Padres.

Joe Torre is sending Clayton Kershaw out to face Shawn Estes.

The Dodgers magic number is down to 3 in the NL West.

I’ll watch that!

Miggy Nominated!

Detroit Tiger’s first baseman, Miguel Cabrera, has been nominated for Major League Baseball’s Hank Aaron Award. Miggy has certainly come around since first coming over to the Tigers this season. Currently, he has a .294 batting average, 36 home runs and he’s driven in 125 runs!

Congratulations on the nomination. I’ve made my vote for you!

The Tigers are hoping to bring a stop to the current 5 game skid. It’s game 2 at Comerica Park tonight against The Royals. Freddy Garcia gets his second nod for the Tigers this season.

Hopefully, it will be as impressive as his first.

KC will be sending Zach Greinke to the hill.

This was to be the last game of the season for me, but I sold my tickets to a friend who’s originally from Kansas City. She hadn’t seen her Royals play yet this year. So, I was glad to be able to spread some good ol’ baseball cheer!

NOW my final game of the season will be Friday night to see the Rays.
